Distance Healing

February 24, 2010 – 1:50 pm

Early in my experience with energy work, I became aware of the possibility of distance healing.  Both through my Reiki training and then during my mentorship with Warren Grossman, I experienced both the giving and the receiving of distance healing, and how powerful it can be.  Yet I am well aware that distance healing is not commonplace in our Western culture, let alone accepted or understood.

The biggest impediment to practicing distance healing is the belief we are separate.  We believe that our energetic system exists entirely within the physical body, and that our consciousness is similarly limited.  So even though many have had experiences which show us this is not true – as in when we can feel a friend or family member is in distress and we call them and sure enough, something’s going on – we tend to discount these as coincidences or due to special relationships.  When we broaden our minds, our hearts and our energy fields, we find that this connection applies to all beings.  And really, isn’t the concept of prayer based on this?

The second biggest impediment to doing distance healing is our ignorance that we have the ability to do it at all.  We are just not made aware of this as an option, not to mention how to do it.  With that in mind,  I will share with you how I did some distance healing work today.   Please understand that my practice of distance healing has varied over time and will likely continue to evolve and differ by the need presented.  I would encourage you to try this for yourself and see what your experience is; then, make it your own.  Follow your intuition and guidance, and trust that it will be perfect.  With an open heart and the clear intention of Highest Good, it will be perfect.

First, I always start by grounding; I do this by consciously connecting to the earth.  You can develop a password, or phrase, that helps you energize this connection.  The phrase I say is:  “I am on the earth, the earth is in my body, the earth and I are one.”  I allow my energy to combine with the earth, letting go of any waste energy and taking in the energy that is in my highest good.  I also ask mother earth for energy to move through me for the person (or group of people), or directly to the person.

Then I connect to the universe:  “I am in the universe, the universe is in my body, the universe and I are joined.”  This connects me to the universal energy, and I send any mental, emotional, physical or spiritual blockages out to the ends (or center) of the universe to be transformed into something even more beautiful.  I ask for my highest good to come to me, as well as energies for the highest good of the person involved.  This is also a time you can ask for your master or guides to come and support you in this process… it could be “God,” Jesus, angels, your grandma or even a beloved animal or totem.  Whatever empowers you and supports you in allowing love and healing energy to flow to and through you.

You should feel the energy from the earth moving up, and the energy from above coming down through your head or even directly to your heart, perhaps creating an energy cocoon around you.  Then place both hands, one over the other, directly over the middle of your chest; feel the energy mix and fill your heart center and your whole body and energy field.  (For the record, this is the practice I do numerous times every day, whether I’m doing energy work or not.  It will keep you happy,  healthy and whole.)

I ask for the person’s soul to come forward, and then I ask permission to work with them and their body; this permission is usually granted, and appears to me as that soul smiling.  If the answer is no, or if you need to explain why you are there, then please honor these requests.  I personally do not believe that sending love and light is ever wrong so long as you ask that it be given with the highest good of the person in mind, but the soul may have reasons it doesn’t want the energy right now, so it’s important to honor that.  (Sidebar: this is also a great technique to use to connect with people you’ll be meeting, before you meet with them… you’ll already have a soul connection established, which can minimize ego/personality issues in human interactions.  So for example, before I go past a gatekeeper of some sort – say, security at an airport – I will connect with them on the soul level.  It makes the whole process sacred instead of a hassle!)

I call forth an image of the person’s body, and scan it to see where there are presenting issues. You may already have some information, and it is good to see what else presents.  You do this through visualization, scanning  your hand across their body image, or paying attention to any information that comes to you.  Spirit talks to us each in our own way; with practice, you’ll begin to learn the language.  You may even see other colors, shapes or images.  Just relax and see what that leads you to do.  You can’t do it wrong… put a smile on your face and love in your heart.   Feel love and send the love from your heart to theirs…  See it warm, glowing, expanding… or whatever comes to you.  Ask mother earth and the universe to send their love and energy also, along with whatever other support you’ve asked for.

You’ll find you’ll be drawn to specific areas… so work with what you become aware of.  Brush away any blockage if you see one, send fresh energy there, see healing energy moving up or down their body into that space.  Follow your intuition.  When an area feels complete, see where you are led next.  Eventually, you’ll feel or see the whole body open, clean and glowing with energy.  Add any finally blessings or good wishes into the energy field, with whatever the earth and universe have for them in their highest good, and then send their energetic body back to where it came from.  See them smiling and waving as they leave, so grateful you shared your time and love with them.

Pull back fully into your own body, re-ground and connect to the universe again to fill yourself up.  Thank the universe, the earth and any other support you had.  Then fully reconnect to this moment and this space.  Tap your body, rub your ears and face – whatever helps you fully come back.  Then thank yourself for the gift you gave.   Release any attachment you may have to the outcome of this work on the other person’s end:  They may feel it, or not; they make get better, they may not.  That is not your business; your business is simply to give as you are inspired.

The beauty of this work is that it reminds us that we are always connected, that distance is an illusion, that we are truly never alone — that we are One.  And if this is so – well, doesn’t that make the universe an interesting place of infinite possibilities?!  So, if distance healing across space is possible, what does this mean about healing across Time…?!  We’ll explore that in my next post!

Earth Work

February 18, 2010 – 5:04 pm

Part of what I teach in most of my workshops and classes involves what I call “grounding” or consciously connecting to the Earth’s energy.  I was taught this work by Warren Grossman, who wrote a wonderful book, To Be Healed By The Earth.  Yet most of what I’m about to share, you knew intuitively as a child.  Part of my life’s work is to remind people of this (hence my title, Earth Mentor), teaching them basic techniques they can use anywhere to reconnect  to the Earth and deepen the conscious experience.  And it’s all free!

This practice of grounding is what supported my transition from banker to… whatever it is that I’ve become!  For well over a year after I left money management, I literally crawled onto Mother Earth every day – snow, rain or shine – and allowed that transformation to occur.  This Mother supports us and love us unconditionally;  and by doing this work, we literally support her back.  There is a natural exchange of energy that is supposed to occur between humans and nature that benefits both — yet in our modern world, we resist.  We have forgotten.

So, I will now share with you some basic ways to not only improve your health and energy flow, have more peace in your life and open your heart, but to also feel your connection to all things.  In case you have any around to observe, little children are masters at this – especially when allowed to be shoeless and in direct contact the earth.

Indeed, my first recommendation is that you avoid wearing shoes and socks as often as possible.  Most shoes constrict the natural shape of the foot, and thereby constrict our connection with the earth.  Some shoes are better than others, e.g., Keens and five finger shoes, but I would still recommend being barefoot as much as possible.  If you feel up to it, give yourself a vigorous foot massage once a day — doing this while sitting in front of the TV is great use of that time, and it feels great.

As for grounding (descriptions following), I recommend doing it as you wake up in the morning and before you go to bed at night, during transition times (say, between work and home), and before/after eating. You cannot ground too much — unless you think you can have too much peace and love!

To ground while standing, either directly on the earth or on a floor (hopefully with bare feet), allow yourself to take three deep gentle breaths, bring all of your attention into your body.  We spend so much time in our heads or even out of our body, we need to first reconnect to our body.

Then soften your knees and pay attention to your feet against the earth.  Notice the coolness, moisture, texture of the surface… whatever comes to you.  Warren teaches to stomp your feet to create sensation in them, so you can focus on the sensations.  Use whatever helps you to move your attention down to your feet and to the point where they touch the Earth.  Imagination allows us to access different parts of our brain than does rational, linear thought, and perhaps even allows us to tap into deeper aspects of soul (irony of sole and soul, eh?).  I use a number of different visualizations to connect to the Earth, but my favorite is imagining myself as a tree.  We do have a trunk and limbs don’t we?  And a crown on the head.  But we forget our roots.

Visualize roots moving down into the earth.  See it moving into the rich soil, through or around rocks and water, and go as deep down into the Earth as you wish.  For some this may be a very fast trip, for others this may be slow.  When your roots are fully in the Earth, breath three times again and visualize any waste energy (energy you no longer need) going into the earth; then just allow the energy of the earth to flow up your roots.  It’s a funny thing, receptivity seems to be the key concept we forget as humans.  All we have to do with the Earth is make the connection and allow the energy to move up into us.  Now some people feel this energy as an electricity, others a warmth, some see it as a light.  However you perceive energy is perfect.  And some, like my wife, have limited sensitivity to this energy so she does it on faith, and then pays attention to results.

See in your mind’s eye, and feel this energy move up your feet into your ankles, knees, hips and the bottom of your torso.  Move is as slowly or as fast as feels right for you.  Know that this energy is opening all your energy channels, moving out waste energy, and healing and energizing any parts of the body that needs it.  Breathe into your belly as this energy fills up even more of your torso, moving up through the diaphragm and into the lungs and heart.  Allow it to flow through your shoulders and down your arms and out your fingertips.  Spread your fingers some and allow the energy to move back to the earth, releasing anything you no longer need.  This feeds the earth, and cleans you out.

Feel the energy move up into your neck and into your head, swirling around and removing all thoughts of yesterday and tomorrow.  Allow the gift of the present to appear.  See this energy move through the top of your head and out into a fountain of energy around you.  You are completely in flow, supported, nourished — and because you are filled with this energy, you will not take on other energies from the outside.  This becomes a very good technique for dealing with stress and with upset people.  Ground, breathe and smile… it not only affects you but everything around you, too.

Trees do this process all the time.  They are the energetic whales of land energy, and if you face a tree (within 10 feet) and ground you will have the tree’s support of the process.  Your body will start to mirror the healthier, stronger energy flow of the tree.  If you feel the need to clean more things out of your body, you can lean your back against the tree, focusing on the connection point of your body and the tree, and the tree will literally take the waste energy out of your body if you allow it.  Visualizing clearing your chakras while leaning against a tree is always powerful.  This exchange of energy is very similar to how we breathe out carbon dioxide, which the trees then use and then “breathe out” oxygen.  Ground before and after connecting with the tree, and play with various trees.  The energies of different trees can vary dramatically.

By laying on the Earth on your back you can experience this same exchange of energy, but I find there is an even deeper peace component.  If you lay on the Earth, with your head near the tree trunk, it will ease your mind.  If you lay on the Earth with your feet near the tree trunk, you will feel more grounded.  Flip over and lay on your stomach to fill up again.  To be comfortable lying on the ground, dress to allow for feeling 10 degrees cooler on the earth than you’d feel if you were standing, and feel free to use mats, blankets, pillows, etc to make this even more comfortable.  Afterward, exercise of any sort is very positive for further cleansing and energy.

You can also ground while sitting, connecting through the bottom of your torso, so it’s perfect for sitting in traffic and at red lights, at work, or even on a plane.  Putting both hands over the middle of your chest helps to fill your heart with energy as you ground.

Try any of these practices… within a week you may experience pretty powerful results.  Blessings!

Past lives

December 27, 2009 – 4:40 pm

A little background:  I was a professional money manager for 20 years (yeah, one of those guys), and although I was more liberal than most in my profession, I was trained to be intellectual, skeptical, self-centered (what’s in it for me?), non-emotional.  I prayed to the God of money (for that was power), and wasn’t very sure anything else happened after we died.  I certainly didn’t believe in standard religion, and any new age stuff was dismissed without a second thought.  Just crazy!  And past lives?!  Well, I had heard a few movie stars claim these exist – and of course, they were always someone powerful and famous in a past life.  But who cleaned out their stables?  Where did those souls go?

Then I began my journey of spiritual awakening.  This didn’t happen overnight for me, but was a journey of many steps and paths, as I tend to be very eclectic.  Along the way, people began to tell me that they had known me before, in a past life.  Now at first I’d respond with “oh, how interesting” – which can be, as a native Minnesotan, a way we dismiss things without having to confront a person or a concept.  I’d think to myself, “Yeah, right.”  For a long time I still thought the idea of past lives was very weird.

My path eventually led me deeper and deeper into energy work: first Reiki, then Earthwork and Qigong.  One of the things I like about energy is that it communicates with me in ways that transcend the rational mind.  I sense something, feel something, have a reaction of attraction or aversion, and this provides me information that sometimes my mind can’t even make sense of.  The more I worked with energy, and the more I continued to open up energetically, I began to “see” and “know” things in ways I could not explain rationally;  at this point, certain information gets pretty hard to dismiss.  (I put quotation marks around ‘see’ and ‘know’, because all anyone can really know for sure is one’s own sense of the experience, one’s own truth.  I suggest that knowing Absolute Truth is beyond most of us in our human form.)

My wife Pam, as is usual, softly introduced me into the arena of past lives as she began exploring it for herself.  After reading Dr. Brian Weiss’ Many Lives, Many Masters, we were intrigued enough to attend a workshop of his.  Among the exercises we did there, there was one where we sat 1:1 with a total stranger and simply stared into their face for length of time… and, fascinated, I observed my partner’s face morph, changing colors and sex, and even facial hair.  This experience, along with my concurrent exploration of Buddhism (which provides strong intellectual support for the concept of reincarnation), made it harder to dismiss this past life thing.  And then I remembered how, on my first date with my now-wife, we spent a half-hour just looking each other deep in the eyes in silence… there was such recognition, such a deep knowing even then.  (By the way, this doesn’t have to mean you’ve known someone in a past life, but I usually find it does.  Of course, all of this could just be a way of spirit talking to us!)

Once I opened myself to the possibility of past lives, the flood gates opened:  all sorts of interesting experiences occurred, including the piecing together of a past-life family with two other people while I was away conducting a workshop out on the West Coast.  This experience created such energy waves in me, it woke my wife up in the middle of the night half a continent away!  She felt the power of our ‘reunion’, even though she had no idea we were even working on this.

That being said,  I’ve quickly learned that while it can be great to recognize ‘old friends’, that mostly it’s really not “special”.  Of course those of us on this path have lived many lives before, and will have interacted with each other probably many times in many configurations: parents, children, siblings, lovers, enemies, friends.   Yes, I believe in soul mates – I just have thousands of them!  So now when the awareness of a past life connection comes up for me,  I may choose to simply note it for myself, or may share it with the other person if they seem open to such information, or if they do with me.  I honor it, and then surrender it.  I do not get attached to making them or our past life connection “special” in this life time.

Occasionally I notice that there’s a disturbance in the force, or energy, between us.  (I sometimes wonder if we are reconnecting now in order to release, heal and reclaim these old energies.)  When I do become aware of this, I consciously choose to forgive and ask forgiveness.  I may keep this to myself if they don’t seem aware of our connection, or may share it aloud as appropriate.  I simply say, “Please forgive me for any pain I have caused you; and I forgive you for any pain you have ever caused me.  I release what no longer serves us, and I celebrate the love which stays with us and propels us forward.”  Then I surrender them and the relationship.  In some cases we become friends;  in most, we go back to our own lives, feeling lighter and more love.

So, other than this freeing-up of energy, how has my acceptance of the existence of past lives benefited me?  It brings me back to a sense of the soul, of this essence within each of us that transcends time and space until it returns home with wisdom and all that love.  That karma may well exist, but that it is more benevolent than we realize: it’s not for punishment, but for opportunities to experience, learn and grow.  That the skills and work we accomplished in other life times can give us a head start in this one.   It helps me realize the limitlessness of time, that all things could be existing at once – or not at all.  That all is God; we are pieces of light, all emanating the One Light.  That everyone, everyone, is this One.  That there is a lot I don’t know or understand.  And that it’s a blessing to get this opportunity to experience this life.  Thank you, God!
